What does laser do?

  • Musculoskeletal Injuries

“The most common applications are muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendinopathies, cartilage tears bursitis and other injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Whether it’s a sports injury, overuse condition, or an accident, the goal of treatment is to accelerate the healing process and decrease symptoms which allows the clinician to initiate manual and exercise therapies much sooner.”

  • Arthritis

“Chronic progressive forms of joint degeneration can be effectively managed with Laser Therapy. All of the arthritides from early to late stages will respond to treatment resulting in decreased pain, inflammation, stiffness and edema. Research has even shown repair and regeneration of eroded hyaline cartilage when exposed to Laser Therapy.”

  • Nerve Healing

“From diabetic neuropathy to discogenic radiculopathy to carpal tunnel syndrome, Laser Therapy can accelerate nerve healing and decrease paraesthesia and nerve pain as a result of direct absorption of light. Many peer reviewed clinical trials and lab studies have proven Laser Therapy is an effective therapy for nerve healing and has no known side effects.”

What is laser?

Laser Therapy, also known as Low-Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT), Photobiomodulation, Cold Laser, etc. is a light-based technology proven to be highly effective in the treatment musculoskeletal problems, and wound healing, and other benefits.

The technology is non-invasive, non-toxic, and is currently utilised in many countries world-wide.

Clinically Proven Benefits

  • Improved pain relief

  • Decreased edema and stiffness

  • Decreased scarring

  • Decreased recurrence of injury

  • Increased patient satisfaction

  • Decreased recovery time

  • Increased range of motion

  • Faster return to activities

  • No side effects

How does it work?

Laser works by utilising photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). It is the therapeutic use of red and near-infrared wavelengths of light energy from laser OR light emitting diodes (LEDs) that interact with photoreceptors of a cell to produce photochemical reactions that have a positive effect on cellular metabolism and recovery from damage and inflammation.

All of the information is taken directly from the Bioflex website (the brand of laser that we use at Upgrade Chiropractic) so if you would like more information please tap the link at the top of this page.

Decreased inflammation and oedema

Increase in inflammatory mediators such as macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes accelerates and resolves the inflammatory process.

low intensity laser therapy showing improved collagen production in Guernsey; can benefit neck pain, discal pain and lower back pain

Increased collagen production

Proper alignment and remodeling of collagen reduces internal scar formation and enhances tissue elasticity.

improved muscular regeneration from low intensity laser therapy in Guernsey in a clinic with chiropractic, physiotherapy and sports massage

Increased muscle regeneration

Repair of damaged muscle fibers and activation of myogenic satellite cells leads to regeneration of muscle tissue.

Increase nerve regeneration

Proliferation of growth factors promotes neuronal sprouting and myelin formation for optimal nerve recovery.

laser therapy for improving cartilage and bone formation in a Guernsey chiropractic clinic with physiotherapy

Increased cartilage + bone formation

Increase in chondrocyte and collagen production allows for improved cartilage deposition and joint function.

Increased angiogenesis + neovascularisation

An increase in oxygenated blood to the injured tissue accelerates tissue healing.

Is it painful?

Not at all; low-intensity laser therapy is firstly a cold laser- so you won’t even feel heat (barring the temperature of the machine), secondly unlike an x-ray it is low radiation and it can not penetrate deeply through the body (think how far you can shine a torch through) your arm for instance) - this means it is excellent at treating the soft tissues within close proximity to the bulbs.

However as it is light energy we may give you red-light blocking glasses to wear to protect your eyes.

Laser treatment

Sometimes your practitioner may do opt to use laser as a supplement to your treatment however sometimes we may utilise the laser for the whole treatment time to maximise exposure to the laser/LED’s for accelerated healing response and decreases in pain, inflammation, oedema (swelling) and associated symptoms.
